Call for Hearable Technology to Increase Safety

London, England - May 14, 2019: New research shows that 37 million Americans who are shocked have put themselves in danger over the past 12 months when wearing headphones or earphones when walking, jogging, or biking. Examples include stepping out onto the road, crashing into someone or not hearing an emergency vehicle approaching.

Assigned by Audio Analytic, a leading AI technology company that focuses on speech recognition, this research explores the risk that people throughout the US are exposed to every day by being distracted from their surroundings while listening to music while traveling.

The risk of increasing younger consumers. More than one in four young people aged between 18 and 34 have put themselves in danger when wearing headphones, because 26% claim to find themselves in at least one dangerous situation over the past year, with many who have done this many times.

Despite this acknowledgment, the study found that the majority of people claimed to be aware of the dangers of wearing headphones and earphones in public. 96% of the population consider it dangerous to wear headphones or earphones while driving, while other activities that are considered dangerous include cycling (91%), running (86%) and traveling using public transportation (72%).

Dr. Richard Lichenstein, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland, added; "Our analysis of accident reports shows that warnings were sounded before the accident in 29% of accidents involving pedestrians wearing headphones. The use of headphones has become commonplace for most pedestrians - and headphones with noise suppression features are becoming more popular. If noise suppression headphones can now be designed to recognize warning sounds and actively warn the wearer of danger, or automatically change sound transmission to increase awareness, then there is potential to reduce the risk of injury among headphone users. "

The results highlighted the demand for headphones to use artificial intelligence, with 88% wanting their audio devices to recognize and remind them of the sound of emergency vehicle sirens. Other important sounds that their headphones want to recognize are; fire alarm (92%), important announcements starting eg. practicing platform changes (83%) and gun shots (90%).

88% of Americans further agree that dynamic noise cancellation, where headphones save battery life by automatically activating noise cancellation when needed, will be useful in various locations such as home, commuting and in the gym. In addition, 58% will buy audible items that have dynamic sound equalization, which allows people who can hear to optimize the audio experience for different acoustic environments.
