Berlin / Venice, May 14, 2019 German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas opens the Rome exhibition FUTUROMA, the official Guarantee Event of 58. La Biennale in Venice, highlights the importance of the Roman minority as an example for a united Europe. In his opening address, the Minister emphasized:

"Rome's art and culture gives me hope for Europe in the future. Their culture is part of our European DNA. For centuries they created human relations between European countries. Rome was never bound by national borders. And when nationalism is on the rise, this is more valuable than ever. "

FUTUROMA, commissioned by ERIAC (European Institute of Art and Culture of Rome) and curated by Daniel Baker, showcases some of the best contemporary visual artists from the European Roma community. In a time of increasing nationalism, a weakening European Union and the rise of anti-gypsies, FUTUROMA sets a counter by showing creativity, solidarity and shared identity as the integrative power of the largest European minority.

While FUTUROMA marks the third time Romani artists are presented at the Biennale Arte, this is the first time this initiative has been led by Rome himself. The transnational, multilingual and multireligious Rome community with more than 12 million throughout Europe does not match the narrative of the national pavilion. Romani art has so far remained invisible to the majority audience. FUTUROMA thus provides a strong signal in an effort to have a permanent presence at the world's most prestigious contemporary art event.

FUTUROMA: until 24 November in Venice, Fondamenta Zattere Allo Spirito Santo, 417.
