LONDON - December 6, 2018 - Britons will spend festive indulgences this year, spending an average of £ 166 per person for their Christmas groceries. Research from a shopping and fundraising platform, Give as You Live, has found that there are seven times more per person than the average weekly expenditure on household food and drinks *.

The biggest festive food spender in the UK
City Average expenditure per person
London £ 199
Bristol 188 pounds
Southampton £ 187
Brighton 182 lbs
Aberdeen 181 lbs
Birmingham 180 lbs
Chelmsford 173 pounds
Portsmouth 172 lbs
Manchester 170 lbs
Newcastle 170 lbs

Cheerful men and luxurious Londoners spend the most
The survey also revealed that men tend to want more pigs in blankets than women, because they are expected to spend an average of £ 177 per person for food during the festive season, above women £ 154 per person.

Across the city, London and Bristol are the biggest Christmas food shoppers with residents paying £ 199 and £ 188 per person respectively, while those in Nottingham and Norwich are simpler in terms of spending on food, with both cities spending an average of £ 122 per person, the lowest expenditure from the cities surveyed.

After all, the Christmas ad was successful
While surveys show that Britons expect to spend a lot of money, it also highlights that Britons can change their preferred supermarket based on Christmas advertisements. According to the results, almost half of Britons (44%) say that Christmas supermarket advertisements encourage them to buy festive food items at grocery stores that are different from usual.

Fierce advertising isn't the only thing that affects the way we shop. The survey questioned Brits on what inspired their weekly shopping list, found that online recipes (37%), TV cooking programs (29%), and videos on Facebook and YouTube (18%) were the main sources of inspiration.

Greg Hallett, managing director at Give as you Live, commented, "Whether it's for families on Christmas, eating out with friends or having a lively dinner party, Christmas food brings people together. But it's also expensive, which is why it's important to make a budget and plan during the festive season, such as with prepaid shopping cards, online transactions, and wholesale purchases. This can all help keep costs down and ensure everyone can enjoy the fun without worrying about too much. "

Give as you Live surveyed 2,000 British consumers about their grocery shopping habits in October 2018.

Editor's note
* Average weekly food and beverage expenditure is £ 23.34 per person according to ONS figures.
